Jalia N.'s Story

Jalia lives with her mother in Jinja and both have faced psychological and emotional abuse from Jalia’s father. Jalia’s mother married in her teenage years and she gave birth to three children. The children and mother experienced and endured abuse from the father until he decided to marry another woman. Due to polygamy Jalia’s father gives minimum financial support to support this family. To boost the little support given, Jalia’s mother sells sweet bananas to earn some money. However, this income is not sufficient to consistently cater for the children’s needs in this home.Due to the financial struggles in this home, Jalia’s education is uncertain. Jalia has always been sent away from school due to unpaid fees, which has led to feelings of despair, uncertainty, and hopelessness. The thought of potentially dropping out weighs heavily on her, filling her with anxiety.
