Jaiden lives with his biological parents and five siblings in the slums. Due to severe financial strain, Jaiden attends school very irregularly. His mother works tirelessly frying and selling cassava along the streets of Katwe to provide for the family, but her small income is not enough to meet basic needs or support the education of all her children.
Jaiden’s father provides little support to the household or to the children’s education, leaving the mother with the overwhelming responsibility of caring for the family alone. Two of Jaiden’s siblings have already dropped out of school at a young age, and without intervention, Jaiden is at risk of following the same path. Sponsorship would give Jaiden the opportunity to attend school consistently, break this cycle, and move toward a more hopeful future.
